Enclosure, Scarteen, Co. Kerry

On the south-facing slopes of Knockleama in south-west Kerry, a ring of large stone slabs sits quietly within rough hill grazing, its interior choked with rushes and its purpose unannounced by any marker or sign.

The structure is modest in scale, eight metres across, but the engineering behind it is quietly deliberate: whoever built it levelled the ground inside by raising the southern edge nearly a metre and cutting back into the upslope on the northern side by sixty centimetres, effectively carving a flat platform out of a hillside that would otherwise have made the whole thing impractical.

The enclosure is one of several features belonging to a wider field system on this terrace, and a second enclosure of similar type lies roughly fifteen metres to the south-south-west. Enclosures of this kind, defined by upright or contiguous stone slabs rather than earthen banks, appear across Kerry and the broader south-west of Ireland, and are generally understood as early agricultural or settlement features, though precise dating without excavation is rarely possible. What sets this particular example apart is the care taken to adapt the structure to its terrain. Some of the defining slabs now lean or have fallen, which is unremarkable given their age, but enough remain in place to give a clear sense of the original circuit. The views from the terrace extend across the valley of the Blackwater River towards Kenmare Bay, a reminder that wherever early communities chose to settle or enclose land, they were rarely indifferent to their surroundings.
