Enclosure, Shanagolden Demesne, Co. Limerick

On a south-facing hillside in the demesne of Shanagolden in County Limerick, a modest earthwork sits quietly in pasture, easy to walk past without quite registering what it is.

What makes it curious is the asymmetry of its survival: one section of its enclosing bank, the curved portion running from east-south-east to south-south-west, retains something close to its original profile, while the rest has been absorbed and reshaped into the boundary of a small field. The result is a structure that reads differently depending on which side you approach from, part ancient earthen enclosure, part agricultural boundary.

The enclosure is roughly rectangular, measuring approximately 32.7 metres north to south and 20.9 metres east to west. The curved bank, which appears to follow the line of the original enclosure, stands considerably more prominent on its exterior than its interior, with an external height of around 2.34 metres against an internal height of just 0.25 metres. The straighter, linear bank sections, which form roughly right-angled corners at the north-west and north-east, are much lower, with an external height of 0.26 metres and an internal height of 0.48 metres. An enclosure of this kind, a bounded area defined by earthen banks, is a common feature of the Irish landscape across many periods, used variously for settlement, agriculture, or ceremonial purposes, though this example has not been definitively assigned a function or date. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2011.

The interior of the enclosure is marshy and slopes gently southward, which is worth keeping in mind underfoot, particularly after rain. The site sits within demesne land at Shanagolden, so access would need to be confirmed before visiting. The curved bank section is the most visually legible part of the monument, and it is worth walking its exterior length to appreciate the full two metres of height that has survived there, a quiet reminder of how much effort the original construction involved, and how thoroughly the rest has been repurposed by later generations working the same land.
