Enclosure, Shanavally, Co. Cork

A circular enclosure that has almost entirely vanished from the ground can sometimes be recovered from above.

At Shanavally in County Cork, a cropmark, the differential growth of vegetation over buried features, reveals the outline of a univallate enclosure, meaning one defined by a single bank or ditch, measuring somewhere between fifteen and twenty metres in diameter. Nothing of it is visible to a person standing in the field, yet the aerial record shows something quietly complex buried just below the surface.

The enclosure sits a short distance to the west of an existing ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead common across early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. That proximity is unlikely to be accidental. To the east of the enclosure, faint cropmark traces suggest a C-shaped annexe of roughly similar diameter, and running from that annexe to the north-east is what appears to be a trackway, defined by two parallel ditches, or fosses, that fork as they approach the field boundary. A straight fosse also runs from the eastern side of the enclosure outward across the annexe in a north-west to south-west direction. Taken together, the picture that emerges is of a small enclosed space connected to the neighbouring ringfort by a web of boundaries, movement routes, and subsidiary enclosures, the kind of layered agricultural and domestic organisation that leaves almost no trace above ground but persists faintly in the soil's memory. Much of the patterning at Shanavally remains difficult to interpret with any certainty, and the cropmark evidence, while suggestive, does not resolve into a neat plan.
