Enclosure, Sheean, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the ploughed fields of Sheean in County Kildare, the outline of a long-vanished enclosure quietly persists, legible only from the air. In 1970, an aerial photograph captured what the ground itself no longer shows: a cropmark tracing the path of a fosse, a defensive ditch, curving around a sub-rectangular area roughly forty metres across at its widest. Cropmarks form when buried features affect how crops grow above them, with ditches often producing lusher, darker growth as moisture collects in the disturbed soil below. The result is a kind of accidental map, printed in cereal or grass, that can disappear entirely the following season and never reappear in quite the same way.

The enclosure at Sheean measures approximately forty metres on its north-west to south-east axis and thirty-five metres on its north-east to south-west axis, dimensions that place it broadly in line with what archaeologists classify as a moated site. Moated sites were typically platforms of raised ground surrounded by water-filled ditches, constructed mainly during the medieval period of Anglo-Norman settlement from the late twelfth century onward. They served as homesteads or manorial centres for minor lords and prosperous farmers, and they appear with some frequency across the flatter, more fertile parts of Leinster, including Kildare. Whether the Sheean enclosure genuinely belongs to that category remains uncertain; the aerial record suggests the possibility rather than confirming it, and no excavation appears to have resolved the question.

Today there is no surface trace surviving at the site, which lies in level tillage land. A visitor standing in the field would find nothing to indicate what lies beneath. The enclosure exists now almost entirely as a single frame of a photograph taken over fifty years ago, a rectangular shadow pressed into a summer crop and preserved, for the moment, in an archive.
