Enclosure, Simmonstown, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the pasture of a Kildare stud farm, the ghost of a circular enclosure lies just out of reach. It leaves no bump in the ground, no ring of stones, no earthen bank to catch the low light of a winter afternoon. The only evidence of its existence is a cropmark, the kind of faint geometric signature that appears in aerial photography when buried features cause overlying vegetation to grow at subtly different rates, revealing outlines invisible from the ground entirely.

The cropmark was identified on a GSI aerial photograph and suggests a possible circular enclosure, the category of monument most commonly associated in Ireland with enclosed farmsteads or ringforts of the early medieval period, though without excavation the dating and function of this particular example remain speculative. What gives the site some additional weight is its setting. It lies on level pasture roughly 100 metres north of a castle, and approximately 250 metres northeast of a possible earthwork site, a proximity that hints at a landscape with a long history of human activity layered across it at different periods. Whether these features were ever related to one another in function or in time is unknown, but their clustering in this relatively small area of County Kildare is worth noting. No visible surface traces of the enclosure survive today.
