Enclosure, Springfield, Co. Galway

Some archaeological sites are notable for what survives.

This one is notable for what has not. On a low hillock amid mixed farmland near Springfield in County Galway, there once stood an enclosure, the kind of roughly circular earthwork that appears in countless forms across the Irish landscape, sometimes the remnant of a ringfort, sometimes an enclosure of less certain purpose. What makes this particular example quietly compelling is the degree to which it has been erased, not all at once, but incrementally, each decade bringing it a little closer to invisibility.

The earliest reliable record comes from the 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which shows only the northern half of the enclosure, measuring approximately 21 metres east to west. Even by then, an east-west field boundary had already cut across it, suggesting the monument had been absorbed into the working agricultural landscape long before the surveyors arrived. By the time the next detailed mapping was carried out, in the 1946 to 1947 edition, the cartographic record had shrunk further still, to a single curving line of hachures indicating only the north-western sector. When a field inspection was carried out in June 1983, no visible surface trace remained at all. More recent aerial imagery from 2019 shows a cluster of trees growing on the spot, the hillock itself now marked only by vegetation rather than by any earthwork.

What the sequence of maps and inspections describes is a site that was already half-gone before it was first properly recorded, and which has since disappeared entirely from the surface. The trees visible today may well be growing from the same raised ground that once gave the enclosure its position, but there is nothing left to see.
