Enclosure, Stonehall, Co. Clare

At Stonehall in County Clare, there is a recorded enclosure that sits quietly in the archaeological register, noted and mapped but not yet fully described in any publicly available form.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and most ambiguous features in the Irish landscape. The term covers a broad range of structures, from ringforts, which were enclosed farmsteads typically dating to the early medieval period, to earlier ceremonial or pastoral boundaries whose original purpose remains contested. Without knowing which category this particular example belongs to, the site occupies an intriguing gap, present enough to be classified, but not yet examined closely enough in the public record to say much more.
