Enclosure, Taur More, Co. Cork

Beneath the planted trees of Taur More in north Cork, there may be a circular enclosure that nobody has walked around in a very long time, possibly ever in the modern sense.

What gives it away is not stone or earthwork but grass, a shift in vegetation colour and growth reading from east to north-west across an aerial photograph, tracing out what appears to be a penannular enclosure roughly thirty metres in diameter. Penannular means almost circular, a ring broken by a deliberate gap, a form used across early medieval Ireland for farmsteads, ceremonial spaces, and enclosures of various kinds. Here, the shape exists only as inference, a ghostly signature pressed into the canopy from above.

The identification comes from aerial photography rather than any ground survey, which is itself telling. Cropmarks and vegetation patterns of this kind emerge when buried features, a filled ditch, a raised bank, alter how plants root and how they respond to dry summers or wet springs. The discipline of reading these marks from the air has revealed enormous numbers of Irish sites that would otherwise be invisible at ground level. At Taur More, the pattern runs east to north-west, consistent with a near-complete ring, though the qualifications attached to the site are careful ones. It is described as a possible enclosure, a reading suggested rather than confirmed.

The site is currently inaccessible due to afforestation, meaning commercial or plantation forestry has grown up across it. This is a common fate for low-lying or inconspicuous archaeological features in Ireland, where planting in the mid-twentieth century covered many sites before their significance was recognised. Whether the enclosure beneath the trees is intact, disturbed, or largely erased is not known.
