Enclosure, Thomastown, Co. Mayo

In the improved pasture of Thomastown in County Mayo, a circle of slightly yellowed grass is just about the last trace of something that was already fading a century ago.

It is not much to look at now, but that pale ring in the turf, roughly twenty metres across, is the ghost of an earthwork that survived long enough to be mapped in 1838, then quietly slipped below the threshold of visibility before the next major survey in 1915.

The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded a circular embanked enclosure here, sitting alongside a second enclosure about ten metres to its north-west and a field boundary running on a north-north-west to south-south-east axis just to its south-west. Circular embanked enclosures of this kind are a common enough feature of the Irish landscape, the remains of enclosed settlements or farmsteads that date broadly to the early medieval period, though precise dating without excavation is difficult. When the site was inspected in 2000, the enclosure was still physically present, if only barely so: a shallow, flat-bottomed depression some twenty-one metres across in both directions, defined by a broad, gentle rim roughly four metres wide. The rim rose no more than about half a metre above the interior at its most pronounced point, and merged so gradually with the surrounding ground that it was easy to miss. A gap in the perimeter at the east-south-east, where the rim levelled off flush with the exterior ground, was interpreted as a possible original entrance. By 2012, even that much was gone. Land reclamation works had flattened the earthwork entirely, leaving only a cropmark: a faint band of slightly yellowish grass tracing the circuit where the old bank once stood, the soil chemistry beneath still registering what the surface no longer shows.
