Enclosures
In the townland of Thomastown in County Mayo, there is a recorded archaeological enclosure, a feature whose very category speaks to the deep past of rural Ireland.
Enclosures of this kind, whether defined by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, were put to many uses across Irish prehistory and the early medieval period, from settlement and farming to ritual activity. Their outlines, often subtle from ground level, can persist in the landscape for thousands of years, visible mainly as cropmarks from the air or as low earthworks that seem unremarkable until their age becomes clear.
