Enclosure, Tubrid More, Co. Kerry

There is something quietly melancholy about a site that survives only on old maps.

At Tubrid More in north County Kerry, an enclosure that may once have been a rath, a type of circular earthwork enclosing a farmstead that was the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, is now essentially a cartographic ghost. It appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1841 to 1842 and again on the 1898 revision, but at some point after those surveys were made, the land was altered, and then altered again, until nothing visible remains at ground level.

The site is described as a possible univallate rath, meaning it would have had a single enclosing bank and ditch rather than the multiple concentric rings found at more elaborate examples. Even before it was levelled entirely, the northern to eastern sector had already been cut through by a fieldbank running roughly north to south-east, a common fate for archaeological features in agricultural landscapes where boundaries are gradually rerouted and old earthworks are seen as inconveniences rather than antiquities. At some point in the years before the site was formally recorded and published in C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey of 1995, whatever remained of the enclosure was levelled, leaving no surface trace.

What makes this place worth noting is not what can be seen but what that absence represents. Raths are among the most numerous archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands once dotting the countryside, yet a significant proportion have been lost to drainage, ploughing, and land clearance, particularly during the twentieth century. Tubrid More is one such casualty, its existence now legible only in the contour lines of a pair of Victorian maps and in the published record of a survey completed just too late to find anything intact.
