Enclosure, Twomilestone, Co. Donegal

On the gently rolling summit of Twomilestone ridge in County Donegal, a faint circular outline in the rough pasture marks the location of an ancient enclosure.

Measuring between 10 and 12 metres across, this modest archaeological feature is so subtle it could easily be missed by the casual walker. What remains is a low, weathered bank or wall foundation, no more than two metres wide, that traces the perimeter of the original structure. Today, it appears as little more than a slight rise in the ground, betrayed mainly by patches of different vegetation that have colonised the old earthwork.

This small enclosure wasn't built in isolation; it formed part of a broader agricultural landscape that once covered this hilltop. Remnants of old field boundaries can still be traced across the ridge, creating a ghostly pattern of sub-rectangular fields that speak to centuries, perhaps millennia, of farming activity. These relict boundaries, now barely visible in the landscape, would once have divided the land into manageable plots for crops or livestock.

The site's position on relatively level ground atop the ridge would have offered several advantages to its builders: good drainage, wide views across the surrounding countryside, and exposure to cooling breezes that might have helped reduce pest problems for stored grain or penned animals. Though time and weather have reduced this enclosure to the faintest of impressions in the landscape, it remains a tangible link to the people who once lived and worked on Twomilestone ridge.
