The structure is modest in scale, roughly twelve metres east to west and ten metres north to south, yet its relationship with the land around it is unusually legible. A spring rises and flows around its eastern perimeter, providing a reliable water source, and the ground immediately surrounding the enclosure offers notably good grazing in an otherwise uneven terrain.

Archaeologist Tony Miller documented the site in June 2012, and his description reveals a structure that was carefully adapted to its setting rather than simply imposed on it. The wall is built from roughly laid field stone, and towards the southwest there is evidence that the interior was terraced and raised, suggesting the builders levelled the ground to create a usable floor within the sloping site. To the west, a series of long field boundaries run down the slope in a way that appears deliberate; in places they would have funnelled animals directly towards the enclosure's entrance, pointing to its likely use as a stock pen or animal management facility of some kind. A hut site recorded a few hundred metres to the west sits in similar rough terrain, hinting that this part of Youngfield once supported a small but organised agricultural presence.
