Farbreague, Cloghan, Co. Leitrim

On a boggy plateau in County Leitrim, four townlands converge at a small pyramid of stones, and the whole arrangement takes its name from a deception.

The Irish place name Farbreague translates roughly as "False man", which refers to a standing stone roughly 2.1 metres tall that, at a distance or in certain light, had the unmistakable appearance of a human figure. It is exactly the kind of feature that stops a traveller in their tracks, convinces them they are not alone, and then does nothing to correct the mistake.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1835 marked the site as a cairn, noting the name in italic lettering, and the 1910 edition repeated it, suggesting the feature held enough local significance to persist across nearly a century of cartographic revision. The OS Name Books record the stone's man-like appearance specifically, which is relatively unusual: Ordnance Survey fieldworkers were not generally given to fanciful description. The spot sits at the exact junction of four townlands, Cloghan to the northwest, Shasgar to the northeast, Lissiniska to the southeast, and Mautiagh to the southwest. Such boundary points were often marked deliberately in the landscape, and here the marker is a low cairn, a roughly pyramidal pile of stones about a metre high and 0.8 metres across. Most of the townland boundaries at this junction are defined by stone walls, though the boundary between Cloghan and Shasgar is absent, leaving that particular line unmarked on the ground. Whether the standing stone itself once served as the primary boundary marker, or whether it predates the townland divisions entirely, is not recorded.
