Field boundary, An Lóthar, Co. Kerry

Beneath the modern field boundaries of An Lóthar on the Iveragh Peninsula, an older landscape quietly persists.

A network of ancient field walls runs through this part of County Kerry, some of them curvilinear in form, meaning they curve and bend rather than following the straight lines typical of more recent land division. That distinction matters: straight field boundaries tend to reflect planned enclosure, often from the eighteenth or nineteenth century onward, while curving walls frequently indicate a much older pattern of land use, one that followed the natural contours of the ground rather than an imposed geometric logic.

What makes the situation at An Lóthar particularly interesting is that the old system has not been swept away entirely. Instead, it has been overlain by the modern field system, leaving the earlier walls partially visible beneath or alongside the later ones. The Iveragh Peninsula has long been recognised as an area of considerable archaeological depth, and A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan's 1996 survey of south Kerry, published by Cork University Press, brought systematic attention to just how much of that layered landscape survives above ground, often unremarked upon by those who pass through it daily. The field walls at An Lóthar are a small but legible part of that record, a place where two different ways of organising land quietly occupy the same ground.
