Field boundary, Ballynew, Co. Galway
Co. Galway |
Ritual/Ceremonial
Field boundaries rarely attract the kind of attention given to ringforts or tower houses, yet they can be among the oldest continuously used features in any Irish landscape.
The one recorded at Ballynew in County Galway is classified as an archaeological monument, which places it in a different category from the ordinary stone walls and ditches that criss-cross the west of Ireland. That designation suggests some combination of age, form, or context that sets it apart from its neighbours, even if the boundary itself might appear, to a passing eye, as just another line drawn across a green field.
