Field boundary, Clonmoney, Co. Clare
Co. Clare |
Ritual/Ceremonial
In the townland of Clonmoney, in County Clare, a field boundary has been deemed significant enough to record as an archaeological monument.
That alone is worth pausing over. Field boundaries are among the most quietly persistent features of the Irish landscape, often overlooked in favour of more obviously dramatic remains, yet the lines that divide land can carry extraordinary age. Some survive from the Early Medieval period or earlier, their original function as enclosures for livestock or tillage long since absorbed into the routine of later farming, their true extent and character only apparent when examined carefully against the surrounding topography.
