Field boundary, Dromlusk, Co. Kerry

On the north-east-facing lower slopes of Knocknagullion in County Kerry, a series of stone walls surfaces intermittently through the bog like sentences half-submerged in water.

These are the remains of an ancient field system, and what makes the site quietly arresting is the bog itself, which has both preserved and obscured the walls simultaneously. Blanket bog accumulates over centuries, burying whatever lies beneath it, and the cutaway sections here have exposed enough to reveal the scale of what was once a working agricultural landscape, roughly 260 metres from north to south and around 220 metres from east to west.

The walls are mostly curvilinear, meaning they follow gentle curves rather than the straight lines associated with later planned enclosures. Where they emerge from the peat, they stand to around 0.45 metres in height and measure about 0.6 metres in thickness. A notable construction detail is that many of the stones are set upright, oriented at right angles to the wall's line, a technique that gives the structure stability without mortar. This is not a solitary boundary but part of a wider complex: within the same network there is a standing stone, a separate enclosure, and a paved way, suggesting that the ground here was once purposefully organised, with routes, boundaries, and possibly ceremonial or funerary features all coexisting across the same hillside. The peat has since drawn a slow curtain over most of it.

The site sits in rough hill pasture at Dromlusk, and the combination of bog terrain and intermittent wall visibility means that much of the field system is more legible as a pattern than as a physical presence. Visitors should expect uneven, wet ground and the particular experience of reading a landscape in fragments, where the archaeology announces itself in glimpses rather than all at once.
