Field boundary, Gowlane, Co. Cork

On a west-facing slope at Gowlane in County Cork, a ghost landscape breaks through the surface of a bog.

Stone walls, low and intermittent, emerge from the peat across an area roughly 380 metres east to west and 150 metres north to south, tracing the outlines of a field system that had been quietly swallowed and preserved beneath the ground. What makes this place quietly unsettling is that the bog itself gives the game away: turf-cutting has exposed base stones sitting directly on the mineral soil beneath, meaning the peat accumulated around and over these walls after they were built. The walls did not sink into a pre-existing bog; the bog grew up around them.

Pre-bog field boundaries are a relatively common find across Ireland's uplands and western fringes, but they are rarely straightforward to read as a landscape. Here, the walls are modest in scale, reaching no more than 0.6 metres thick and 0.55 metres high where they survive above the surface, and the bog covering them ranges from 0.2 to 1 metre deep. At the south-western end of the network, something more telling emerges: the walls appear to radiate outward from a rath, a type of enclosed farmstead typically defined by a circular earthen bank and ditch, widely associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland. The association between the field system and the rath suggests this was a working agricultural landscape, likely farmed during the early medieval period before the encroaching bog rendered it unviable. Roughly 60 metres to the north-west, across a river, a hut site adds another layer to the picture, hinting at a cluster of activity in an area that now appears as empty hill pasture.
