Field boundary, Kill, Co. Kerry

At Kill in County Kerry, a thirty-metre stretch of ancient walling sits quietly against the eastern side of a cairn, a detail easy to overlook but carrying considerable age within it.

What makes it notable is its classification as a pre-bog wall, meaning it was built before the surrounding blanket bog grew up to engulf and preserve it. Blanket bog, which forms gradually over millennia as waterlogged, acidic conditions prevent plant matter from decomposing, has a tendency to swallow the landscapes it spreads across, and when it retreats or is cut away, it sometimes gives back walls, field systems, and traces of settlement that would otherwise have vanished entirely. This fragment at Kill is one such survival.
