Field boundary, Shronebirrane, Co. Kerry

On the lower southern slopes of Tooth Mountain in County Kerry, a set of ancient stone walls threads through the bog, appearing and disappearing beneath the surface like something half-remembered.

These are relict field boundaries, the remnants of an organised agricultural landscape that has long since been swallowed by encroaching peat. Walls roughly sixty-five centimetres thick and sixty centimetres high protrude intermittently from the ground, running in both straight and curving lines across an area of approximately two hundred metres east to west and a hundred and eighty metres north to south. Several sections have collapsed entirely, leaving gaps where the pattern breaks off before picking up again a little further on.

Bog growth is a slow and indifferent archivist. As peat accumulates over centuries, it preserves what lies beneath while simultaneously erasing it from view, so that field systems which were once actively farmed can vanish from collective memory and then resurface, quite literally, as the surface shifts or is cut. The walls at Shronebirrane sit in rough hill pasture, and their curvilinear elements suggest an early medieval origin, a period when Irish farmers often laid out fields in irregular, rounded patterns rather than the rigidly geometric enclosures associated with later plantation-era land use. Adding further context to the site, a second network of relict field boundaries and a cashel, a type of stone-walled enclosure typically encircling an early medieval farmstead or settlement, lie immediately to the west, hinting at a broader landscape of habitation and land management that once operated across this hillside.
