Field system, Abbey, Co. Galway

Just to the west and north of Knockmoy Abbey in County Galway, the ground holds the faint outline of a working landscape that has long since gone quiet.

What survives is a series of old field boundaries, covering an area roughly 550 metres from northwest to southeast and around 400 metres from northeast to southwest, their low stone walls collapsed and grown over with grass. Some of the fields follow a rectilinear plan, and traces of cultivation are still readable in the soil beneath the turf. It is the kind of place that rewards a slow look rather than a quick glance, the kind of agricultural ghost that is easy to walk past without realising what it is.

The field system sits in the shadow of Knockmoy Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the late twelfth century. The Cistercians were notable across medieval Europe for their approach to land management, often clearing and cultivating the ground around their houses with considerable organisation and effort. Whether this particular field system is directly connected to the abbey's working economy, or represents an earlier or later pattern of land use, the notes do not say with certainty. What is clear is that the remains are considered significant enough to carry a preservation order under the National Monuments Acts, which gives some measure of the weight placed on their survival. Rectilinear field boundaries of this kind, defined by dry-stone or rubble walls, are a relatively common feature of the medieval and post-medieval Irish countryside, but intact examples covering this kind of area are less frequently encountered in such legible condition.
