Field system, Abbeytown, Co. Galway

In a field just north of a church and graveyard near Abbeytown in County Galway, the ground holds the faint outline of a village that has otherwise been almost entirely forgotten.

Low earthen banks, shallow trenches, and cultivation ridges spread across an area of roughly 160 metres east to west and 150 metres north to south, forming a complex of small, irregular fields. Within that same area, three or four rectangular features have been identified as possible house foundations, and two low crescentic structures, tentatively described as small site huts, add to the sense that this was once a place where people lived, worked, and built. Local tradition names it as the remains of the old village of Kilnamanagh.

The site came to wider attention through aerial reconnaissance in July 1968, when photographs revealed the earthworks clustered around the church and graveyard. By January 1985, however, the picture had already changed significantly: land reclamation had removed or obscured the earthworks to the east and south, leaving only the field immediately to the north of the graveyard still legible. What survives there is thought to be connected to a probable early ecclesiastical enclosure nearby, suggesting the settlement had its origins in the kind of monastic or church-associated community that was common across early medieval Ireland. The cultivation ridges, those long parallel mounds formed by hand-digging or spade tillage, are coeval with the irregular field boundaries, meaning the farming and the settlement appear to have developed together rather than at separate times. Researchers Higgins and McHugh noted the site in 1990, carefully hedging their interpretations where the evidence remained ambiguous, which is itself a reminder of how much of this landscape has been lost to modern agriculture before it could be properly examined.
