Field system, Behagh, Co. Clare

At the western foot of Abbey Hill in County Clare, a patch of ground has spent decades being misread.

What an Air Corps aerial photograph from 1954 appeared to show as a field system turned out, on closer inspection in 1997, to be an area of rough outcropping rock that had been only partially reclaimed. No clear archaeological features were found that year, and the site was quietly reclassified in the minds of those who looked at it.

The story does not quite end there, though. The site had already been catalogued as an enclosure complex in the Sites and Monuments Record in 1992 and again in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, classifications based largely on the earlier aerial evidence. When a field officer visited in 1997, the landowner mentioned that paddocks and sheep shelters had been cleared from the area some years before, which may partly explain why the ground read so ambiguously. Then, when orthophotographs taken between 2013 and 2018 were examined, something else emerged: an arc of what may be a medieval enclosure, the faint outline of a possible hut site, and a series of lazy beds, the narrow raised cultivation ridges used extensively in Ireland from the medieval period through to the nineteenth century, all visible within a pocket of rock outcrop surrounded by otherwise reclaimed agricultural land.

What Behagh offers, then, is less a monument than a palimpsest, a landscape that has been worked, abandoned, partially cleared, and reread across seventy years of observation. The features visible in recent aerial imagery have not been excavated or confirmed, and their interpretation remains tentative. But the arc of enclosure and those faint ridges in the rock suggest that this hillside margin was once more deliberately organised than the rough pasture around it would now suggest.
