Field system, Beltra, Co. Mayo

Near the townland of Beltra in County Mayo, an ancient field system survives in the landscape, a quietly legible record of how people once divided, worked, and understood the land beneath their feet.

Field systems of this kind, arrangements of walls, banks, or ditches laid out to organise agricultural land, can date anywhere from the Bronze Age to the post-medieval period, and the west of Ireland holds some of the oldest and best-preserved examples anywhere in Europe. What makes them compelling is their ordinariness. These were not monuments built for ceremony or defence but the working infrastructure of daily life, and yet they have outlasted almost everything else.
