Field system, Cahermaculick, Co. Mayo

Beneath the reclaimed pasture at Cahermaculick in County Mayo lies the flattened ghost of an entire small community.

What was once a coherent landscape of walled fields, dwelling places, and enclosures has been levelled by agricultural improvement, leaving little visible at ground level today. What makes this site quietly remarkable is not what remains standing but what the ground still holds in outline, and what aerial photography has allowed us to read back into the land.

When the site was inspected in 1984, a series of low banks could still be traced forming rectilinear fields across a small east-to-southwest ridge and the lower ground to its south and east. That southern edge borders an area of boggy ground containing a small turlough, a seasonal lake that fills and empties depending on the water table, common in the limestone lowlands of the west of Ireland. Within the field system, surveyors identified two cashels, which are dry-stone walled enclosures of early medieval origin typically used as farmsteads or settlement enclosures, along with two house sites and a possible hut site. Aerial photographs taken for the Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography and the Geological Survey of Ireland captured the site in greater detail, revealing cultivation ridges visible inside many of the small field plots. These ridges, formed by repeated spade or plough tillage, are a familiar signature of pre-Famine subsistence farming across the west of Ireland, though the cashels here suggest the settlement itself may have considerably older roots. The site was subsequently levelled during land reclamation, a process documented by Lavelle, which erased most of the upstanding features that had survived into the twentieth century.

Because the site has been levelled and now sits within working pasture, there is little to see on the ground without specialist knowledge. The turlough to the south remains a notable natural feature of the surrounding landscape, and the aerial photographic record preserves what the land itself no longer shows.
