Field system, Doonflin, Co. Sligo

On a terrace of pasture above a river ravine in County Sligo, an organised grid of rectangular fields spreads across roughly 400 metres from north to south and 250 metres from east to west.

What makes Doonflin quietly arresting is the layering of time compressed into one gently undulating landscape, where low sod-covered banks and wall-footings record the working lives of people who farmed here, probably after 1700, while below those arrangements sits something considerably older.

The field system divides into two distinct zones. To the east and south-east, a concentration of smaller fields, each roughly 55 to 60 metres on one axis and 25 to 35 metres on the other, is defined by low earthen banks between about half a metre and 0.8 metres high. Against one of these boundaries sit the wall-footings of a rectangular two-roomed house, and the surrounding small enclosures are thought to have served as garden plots, the domestic ground of a modest rural settlement. Further west and north, the traces are fainter: levelled boundaries outlining larger rectangular fields, with the ghostly corrugations of old cultivation ridges still faintly legible across the ground. At the southern end of the whole complex, the field system absorbs and reuses the enclosing banks of an earlier ringfort or cashel, a ringfort being a roughly circular enclosed farmstead, typically of early medieval date, defined by one or more earthen or stone banks. The fields and house appear to post-date that earlier structure, which makes the sequence at Doonflin a quiet palimpsest: early medieval enclosure, post-1700 reorganisation, the remnants of small-scale quarrying towards the south-east, and rock outcropping breaking through it all. None of these elements announces itself loudly, but together they describe a small piece of ground that was repeatedly claimed, divided, and worked across several centuries.
