What survives is a sprawling field system, stretching roughly 340 metres east to west and 420 metres north to south, made up of curvilinear stone walls, most of them collapsed and turf-covered, their original height and thickness now reduced to low, soft ridges barely half a metre tall. The walls enclose fields of many different shapes and sizes, and gaps appear throughout, whether by design as original entrances or through later collapse it is not always possible to say.

This is not simply an arrangement of old farmland. Scattered across the same area are seventeen hut sites and two enclosures, all contained within the field system itself. That concentration of domestic remains alongside field boundaries points to a community that once lived and worked across this hillside, organising the land around their daily needs. The curvilinear form of the walls, in which boundaries follow gentle curves rather than straight lines, is a pattern associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, though without excavation the precise dating of a site like this remains difficult to pin down. Occasional patches of shallow bog interrupt the dry hill pasture, a reminder that the landscape here has shifted over time, and that what once made a slope attractive for settlement, good drainage and a southerly aspect, may have been gradually undermined by encroaching wet ground.

The scale of what remains at Erneen is easy to underestimate. Grass-covered rubble is not dramatic, but the sheer extent of the system, nearly two dozen associated features across a considerable area of hillside, suggests that this was once a place of some significance to the people who shaped it.
