Field system, Kilcloony, Co. Galway

Beneath the grass of a Galway pasture, a ghost landscape persists.

In the townland of Kilcloony, LiDAR imagery, which uses laser pulses to map surface features invisible to the naked eye, has revealed a cluster of small fields and plots arranged around a cashel, a stone-walled ringfort of early medieval origin. The fields extend roughly 150 metres from west-northwest to east-southeast and about 115 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest, a modest but coherent patch of organised ground that has quietly outlasted whatever community once worked it.

What makes the arrangement particularly interesting is the relationship between the field system and the cashel it surrounds. The plots are small and follow irregular, organic outlines rather than the straight-edged geometry of later planned enclosure, which points toward an earlier, more piecemeal pattern of cultivation. FitzPatrick, writing in 2019, connected the fields to a possible rectangular building visible in the western half of the cashel's interior. Rectangular buildings within ringforts are often associated with the late medieval period, when earlier defensive enclosures were sometimes reoccupied or adapted for agricultural use, and this structure may represent exactly that kind of secondary inhabitation. If so, the fields outside and the building inside may belong to the same late medieval moment, a later community making use of an older stone enclosure and laying out working plots around it.

The whole complex sits in ordinary pastureland today, with nothing obviously marking its presence at ground level. Its legibility depends almost entirely on remote sensing rather than on anything a visitor could readily trace on foot, which gives Kilcloony a particular quality: a landscape that has surrendered its shape only to technology, and that continues to look, from the surface, like unremarkable Connacht countryside.
