Field system, Tullamoylin, Co. Tipperary

Beside the River Dolla in County Tipperary, a cluster of earthworks marks the outline of a settlement that has largely been forgotten by the surrounding landscape.

What survives includes house platforms, a sunken way, and remnants of field systems arranged around what is likely a tower house, the kind of compact fortified residence common to late medieval Ireland. The earthworks run to the west and north of the tower house, though the landowner has noted that further remains to the south were levelled in recent years, shrinking what was once a more extensive trace of a vanished community.

The site sits in low-lying ground and was clearly more than an isolated fortification. The Down Survey, a mid-seventeenth-century mapping project commissioned to record Irish landholdings ahead of Cromwellian redistribution, marks both a castle and a watermill here, suggesting a working settlement with real economic activity. A watermill in this context would have served the surrounding agricultural community, processing grain from the very fields whose boundaries can still, in part, be read in the ground. Documentary evidence fills in a name: an early seventeenth-century Inquisition into the property of a Gerald Grace lists the 'castle, towne and lands of Tollowmoyline', which places a recognised settlement here with a distinct identity at that time. Gleeson and Leask, writing in 1938, recorded this reference, giving the place a foothold in the historical record even as its physical remains continued to erode.
