Estate Features
On the Woodlawn estate in County Galway, a fish-pond sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of feature that tends to disappear from maps and memory alike once the household it served has gone.
Ornamental and functional in equal measure, estate fish-ponds were a common feature of Anglo-Irish demesnes from the seventeenth century onwards, supplying fresh fish to the big house while also lending a certain formal order to the grounds. That combination of utility and display was precisely the point.
