Font, Ballyard, Co. Tipperary

An octagonal limestone font now sits in the grounds of Newport Roman Catholic church in County Tipperary, quietly displaced from the site it was made for.

The object itself is a stoup, a vessel for holy water, carved from limestone into eight sides and originally set upon a four-clustered column, a base formed from four shafts gathered together, a form that suggests some care and craft in its original making.

The font came from the old church and graveyard at Ballyard, a site that has since receded from active use while the font itself was carried elsewhere for safekeeping or continued devotion. The transfer preserved the object, though it severed the connection between the carved stonework and the ecclesiastical site at Ballyard where it once belonged. Such movements were not uncommon as older rural churches fell into ruin and their furnishings migrated to functioning parishes nearby.
