Fort, Cabragh, Co. Cavan

At the southern tip of a drumlin ridge in County Cavan, a circular earthwork sits overgrown and quietly substantial, its outer bank rising over three metres above the surrounding ground.

That exterior height is deceptive in places, partly a product of a farm lane whose own bank runs alongside the fosse and amplifies the apparent depth of the ditch below. The fosse itself, a flat-bottomed defensive trench of the kind that would once have made uninvited entry considerably more difficult, survives only along the southern, western, and north-eastern arc of the monument, the rest having been lost or obscured over time.

The earthwork measures roughly forty metres across and belongs to a class of circular ringfort, or rath, that served as an enclosed farmstead or place of local authority across Ireland from the early medieval period onwards. The site sits in a landscape shaped by drumlins, the long, whale-backed ridges of glacial till that give much of Counties Cavan and Monaghan their distinctive rolling character, and its position at the southern end of one such ridge, with the Annalee River running roughly three hundred and fifty metres to the south, suggests the kind of deliberate, defensible placement typical of such enclosures. When surveyors recorded the site in 1969, they noted a clearly defined entrance through the bank on the south-eastern side, with a causeway measuring nearly six metres across and rising one and a half metres in height. By the time of more recent assessment, those features had become considerably more amorphous, the sharp edges of the original construction softened by decades of vegetation and agricultural proximity.
