Fort, Cam, Co. Longford

Near the townland of Cam in County Longford, two oval enclosures sit side by side on a low ridge, their outlines invisible to anyone standing among them.

This south-eastern of the pair is one of those places that exists more confidently on paper than on the ground, its presence confirmed by cartography rather than by anything the eye can immediately resolve.

The earliest reliable record of these conjoined enclosures appears on the 1837 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, where both are marked with the designation "Forts", the term commonly applied at that period to the earthwork enclosures known today as ringforts. Ringforts, circular or oval banks of earth and sometimes stone that once enclosed farmsteads, are among the most numerous archaeological monuments in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country. What makes this site somewhat unusual is the conjoined arrangement: two enclosures sharing a boundary or wall, a configuration that is far less common than the solitary ringfort and may suggest a planned expansion, a familial pairing of households, or a specialised use of one enclosure alongside a domestic one. The ridge setting, subtle as it is on otherwise level midland ground, would have offered a modest advantage in terms of drainage and visibility.

The fact that neither enclosure is visible at ground level today points to the gradual levelling that agricultural improvement has wrought on so many Irish earthworks over the past two centuries. What the 1837 surveyors could apparently still distinguish has since been reduced, leaving the cartographic record as the primary witness to what was once a paired and probably inhabited landscape feature.
