Ringforts
On a low knoll amid the rolling pasture of Cartron in County Longford, a subtly raised platform in the ground marks the outline of a structure whose original purpose has long since blurred into the landscape.
It is easy to miss, and that is precisely what makes it worth attention. The site is a ringfort, or the remnant of one, a form of enclosed settlement common across Ireland from roughly the early medieval period onward. Thousands were built, typically consisting of an earthen or stone bank surrounding a domestic space, and many have since been levelled by agriculture or eroded into near-invisibility.
