Fort, Cavan, Co. Monaghan

On the summit of a drumlin in County Monaghan, a D-shaped earthwork sits in quiet obscurity, its grassy banks absorbed so thoroughly into the surrounding field boundaries that a casual walker might never register it as anything other than an ordinary hedge line.

What marks it out is its scale and geometry: roughly 78 metres east to west and 68 metres north to south, defined by an earthen bank with an outer drain running along its southern and south-western arc, the whole thing oriented with a precision that speaks to deliberate, organised construction rather than gradual agricultural accumulation.

The site appears on the 1834 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, labelled in the gothic lettering that cartographers of that period reserved for antiquities, simply as a "fort". That designation almost certainly points to a ringfort, or rath, the type of enclosed farmstead that was widespread across early medieval Ireland, broadly from the fifth to the twelfth century. Ringforts were typically circular or near-circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as defended farmsteads by farming families of varying social rank. This example is D-shaped rather than fully circular, which may reflect the influence of the drumlin topography on its original layout. The earthen bank survives to an external height of nearly two metres in places, with a base width of four and a half metres, dimensions that suggest a reasonably substantial construction. No original entrance has been identified, and the perimeter has been partially absorbed into later field banks and hedging on its south-western to north-eastern side, complicating any reading of the monument's original form.
