Fort, Drumhaman, Co. Monaghan

On the summit of a drumlin in County Monaghan, there is a fort that has essentially ceased to exist, yet refuses to disappear entirely.

A drumlin is a smooth, elongated hill formed from glacial deposits, and in Ireland these low rounded mounds were frequently chosen as sites for ring forts, the circular enclosures that served as farmsteads and defended homesteads throughout the early medieval period. At Drumhaman, one such enclosure once occupied the hilltop, and what makes it peculiar is not what survives but the slow, documented process of its vanishing.

The fort appears with reasonable clarity on McCrea's map of County Monaghan, drawn in 1793, and again on the first Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1834, where it is marked in gothic lettering as a "fort" and shown as a circular embanked enclosure roughly 35 metres in external diameter, surrounded by a curving field bank running from east-south-east to west. By the time anyone looked carefully at the ground again, the enclosure had been absorbed into the surrounding farmland, its interior divided across three separate fields. The circular form that cartographers recorded twice across four decades had been largely erased by agricultural reorganisation.

What remains is slight but legible to a careful eye. The field bank to the south-west of the original enclosure is still present, and along the southern arc of where the fort once stood, a low scarp covered in grass and scrub traces the edge of the old earthwork. It is the kind of survival that rewards patience rather than spectacle, a faint crease in the landscape that only makes sense once you know what you are looking at and where to place yourself on the hill.
