Fort, Laragh, Co. Monaghan

That absence is itself the point. A ringfort, the type of circular earthwork enclosure built in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead or defended homestead, once occupied this elevated ground near Laragh, its banks and fosse laid out with reasonable precision across the ridgeline. By 1984, it was gone.

When surveyors recorded the site in 1967, they found a roughly circular earthwork measuring 26 metres across in both directions, defined by an earthen bank that varied considerably in condition even then. On the south-western side the internal height had eroded to just 0.2 metres, barely a ripple in the ground, while on the southern arc it still stood 0.9 metres above the interior. At the north-east, the bank had been reduced entirely to a scarp, a near-vertical cut face, still 2.4 metres high from base to top. An outer fosse, the ditch running around the outside of the bank, survived in partial form at both the north-east and south-west, though it was shallow and narrow, especially at the south-west where it had largely silted or degraded. No original entrance could be identified during that survey, meaning whatever gap or causeway once allowed access had already been obscured or destroyed. Within seventeen years of that record being made, the entire monument had been removed.

The drumlin landscape of County Monaghan is dense with such sites, or with the memory of them. Drumlins, the elongated oval hills shaped by glacial deposition, provided early settlement with natural advantages: drainage, visibility, defensible elevation. The choice of this particular ridge for an enclosure was entirely legible within that tradition. What makes this site worth marking is not what it was, but the speed of its erasure, documented in the gap between a careful 1967 survey and a 1984 note of absence, a monument reduced to a file reference.
