Fort, Tullyard, Co. Monaghan

On the south-east-facing slope of a drumlin in County Monaghan, there is a site that appears on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map, labelled in the distinctive gothic lettering reserved for ancient monuments, as a fort.

Walk the same ground today and you will find nothing. No bank, no ditch, no earthwork of any kind breaks the surface of what is now ordinary pasture.

The site was recorded as a circular embanked enclosure, roughly 35 metres in external diameter, of the type broadly referred to in Irish archaeology as a rath or ringfort. These were enclosed farmsteads, typically of early medieval date, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches and used as protected settlements for farming families. By the time the OS surveyors revised their mapping in 1907, whatever they had seen or recorded in 1834 had reduced to little more than a curve in a field boundary running east to south-west, the enclosure by then almost entirely absorbed into the agricultural landscape around it. That gradual erasure is itself a common story in the drumlin country of Ulster, where generations of ploughing, drainage, and boundary adjustment have quietly levelled features that were already ancient when they were first mapped.

What remains at Tullyard is essentially cartographic. The gothic lettering of the 1834 map is the most substantial thing the fort has left behind, a label for a landscape that no longer shows its archaeology at the surface.
