Fulacht fia, Adamswood, Co. Limerick

A spread of scorched, cracked stone buried in a field near Adamswood is not the kind of thing that stops a sewerage crew in their tracks, but this one did.

What they had uncovered was a fulacht fia, the term used for a class of prehistoric cooking or heating site found in considerable numbers across Ireland. The typical interpretation is that these were places where water was boiled by dropping fire-heated stones into a trough; the stones, repeatedly cracked by thermal shock, accumulated over time into the characteristic mounded spreads that survive in the ground today.

This particular example came to light during archaeological monitoring of the Croagh Sewerage Scheme in County Limerick, carried out under licence 02E1214 by archaeologist Sarah McCutcheon. The feature recorded was described as a burnt spread, measuring approximately nine metres east to west and 3.6 metres across, with a depth ranging from roughly 0.1 to 0.34 metres. It lay about 454 metres west of the treatment plant and had no associated features identified within the excavation area, though the spread continued beyond the northern limit of the trench, meaning its full extent was never established. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to the national excavations database in August 2012.

The site is not marked or publicly interpreted, and there is no visitor infrastructure in place. It sits within what was an infrastructure corridor, so access is unlikely to be straightforward. The interest here is less in visiting than in understanding how often these sites surface, almost incidentally, during routine groundworks. Ireland has thousands of recorded fulachtaí fia, many of them found precisely this way, with no fanfare, no monument, and no plaque, just a patch of burnt stone that someone noticed before the digger moved on.
