Fulacht fia, Aglish, Co. Cork

In a patch of marshy ground beside a stream in Aglish, County Cork, there is a spread of burnt stone and scorched earth that most passers-by would never recognise as anything at all.

It is, in fact, the remains of a fulacht fia, one of the most common yet persistently mysterious monument types in the Irish landscape. A fulacht fia is a prehistoric cooking site, typically consisting of a trough dug into wet ground, filled with water, and heated by dropping fire-cracked stones into it until the water boiled. The cracked and blackened stones were then piled to one side, forming the low, horseshoe-shaped mound that survives at many sites. At Aglish, the full extent of the spread has not been determined, which is itself a reminder of how many of these places exist only as partial traces, their boundaries obscured by centuries of peat growth and agricultural activity.

What makes this particular site more than just a single data point is its context along the stream. It sits as one of a cluster of three fulachta fiadh running along the northern bank, which is a pattern seen repeatedly across Ireland. Streams and boggy ground were not incidental to these sites; they were the whole point. Reliable water and soft, workable ground were the basic requirements, and wherever those conditions were met, communities returned, sometimes across generations. Whether the three sites at Aglish represent simultaneous use, seasonal revisits over a long period, or distinct episodes separated by centuries is not known. Bronze Age in date is the broad assumption for most fulachta fiadh, though the type spans a wide chronological range and their precise function, cooking, bathing, textile processing, or some combination, continues to be debated among archaeologists.
