Fulacht fia, Ardskeagh, Co. Cork

Beneath a tilled field in Ardskeagh, north County Cork, lies one of the most common yet consistently underappreciated monuments in the Irish landscape.

What survives here is barely visible, a low mound of burnt material measuring roughly 24 metres east to west and 14 metres north to south, its contours so gentle that a casual walker might cross it without a second thought. That unremarkable hump in the earth is, in all likelihood, the accumulated debris of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland and particularly concentrated in Munster.

Fulachtaí fia, the plural form, are typically interpreted as outdoor cooking places, though debate continues about whether some served other purposes such as bathing or textile processing. The basic method involved heating stones in a fire until they were intensely hot, then dropping them into a water-filled trough, usually timber-lined, to bring it rapidly to a boil. The cracked and shattered stones, blackened and spent, were piled to one side after each use, and it is precisely this discard heap, a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-fractured material, that endures in the ground long after the timber and organic remains have disappeared. The mound at Ardskeagh fits this pattern exactly. Most fulachtaí fia date to the Bronze Age, broadly between 2000 and 500 BC, though some earlier and later examples are known. The fact that this one sits in active tillage land means the plough will have compressed and disturbed its profile over generations, which accounts for why it is now so faint at the surface.
