Fulacht fia, Baile An Tsagairt, Co. Kerry

In a level, marshy field in Baile An Tsagairt on the Dingle Peninsula, a low horseshoe-shaped mound sits so thickly overgrown that it could pass for a natural rise in the ground.

It is not. What lies beneath the vegetation is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in their hundreds across Ireland, typically dated to the Bronze Age. The defining characteristic is the mound itself, which is formed almost entirely from fire-shattered stone, the discarded debris of a process in which rocks were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil. Over repeated use, those spent and cracked stones accumulated into the distinctive horseshoe shape, open at one end where the trough would have sat.

This particular example measures roughly 9.25 metres east to west and about 8 metres north to south, rising to approximately a metre in height. Two flat slabs, resembling paving stones, sit just inside the open northern end of the mound on its western side, a detail that hints at some structural element of the original installation, though their precise function is not firmly established. The site was recorded by J. Cuppage in the Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, published in 1986. The marshy, low-lying ground is typical of where fulachta fia are found; such sites almost always occur near a reliable water source, and boggy terrain tends to preserve them well. Less easy to explain is an L-shaped pit, two metres by one and a half metres and roughly a metre deep, dug into the centre of the mound. This appears to be of fairly recent origin, post-dating the ancient deposit entirely, and its purpose is unclear. Recent drainage work in the surrounding field has left spoil heaped alongside the mound to the north and south, adding a layer of modern intervention to an already altered site.
