Fulacht fia, Ballycullen, Co. Limerick

Scattered across Ireland in their thousands, fulachtaí fia are among the most common yet least understood archaeological features in the landscape.

The one at Ballycullen in County Limerick is no exception, leaving behind the quiet forensic signature that archaeologists have come to recognise instantly: heat-shattered stones and charcoal-rich material, the stubborn residue of repeated, intense burning near water.

A fulacht fia, broadly speaking, is a Bronze Age cooking or heating site, typically comprising a trough, a hearth, and a mound of cracked stone discarded after use. The process involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil, a method that shatters the stones over time and leaves behind the characteristic mounded debris. The Ballycullen site was excavated under licence reference 02E0748, with the work carried out by Brian Halpin. The finds were recorded as heat-shattered stones and charcoal-rich material, described as typically associated with a fulacht fiadh, which places it firmly within this well-established prehistoric tradition, though the precise date of use at Ballycullen is not specified in the excavation record.

Ballycullen is in County Limerick, and as with most fulachtaí fia, there is little to see above ground after excavation has concluded. These sites do not announce themselves with standing stones or earthworks; they tend to survive as low, horseshoe-shaped mounds in damp ground, often close to a stream or boggy hollow. If you are exploring the area with an interest in the prehistoric landscape, the excavations.ie database, where this record was originally published, is the most reliable starting point for locating and understanding what was found here. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2012.
