Fulacht fia, Ballygambon, Co. Waterford

On a north-east-facing slope in Ballygambon, County Waterford, a low, overgrown mound sits quietly beside a ridge, barely distinguishable from the surrounding landscape. It measures roughly fifteen metres east to west and ten metres north to south, rising only about thirty centimetres from the ground. That modest profile is typical of a fulacht fia, a class of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, usually identified by the characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone left behind after repeated use. The standard interpretation is that stones were heated in a fire, dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, and used for cooking meat, though some archaeologists have argued for other uses including brewing or bathing.

What makes the Ballygambon example quietly interesting is its pairing. Immediately to the east lies a second fulacht fia, and the two sites sit close enough together to suggest either prolonged activity in this spot over time or perhaps simultaneous use during the Bronze Age, when these sites were most commonly in operation. The Ballygambon mound was recorded as a fulacht fia only on the 1927 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which means it entered the formal record relatively late, identified from cartographic evidence rather than excavation. Without digging, it is impossible to know precisely when it was built or used, but the form and position on a sheltered, north-east-facing ridge slope are consistent with the broader pattern seen at fulacht fia sites across Munster, which tend to cluster near water sources and lower ground.
