A fulacht fia, at its simplest, is the remains of an ancient cooking or heating site. The typical arrangement involves a trough dug into the ground, often timber-lined, into which water was poured. Stones were heated in a nearby fire and then dropped into the trough to bring the water to a boil, at which point meat could be cooked. The discarded, shattered stones accumulated over time into the distinctive mound that survives today.
