Fulacht fia, Ballynamona, Co. Cork

In a pasture field at Ballynamona in County Cork, a low grass-covered spread of burnt material is all that marks what was once a fulacht fia.

The term refers to a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically identified by a mound of fire-cracked stones and charred material left behind after repeated use. They are among the most common archaeological monument types on the island, yet individually they tend to pass unnoticed, blending into the landscape as gentle humps in a field.

This particular example came to light not through formal excavation but through land reclamation work. The field in which it sits was originally marshy ground, which is entirely in keeping with how these sites tend to be distributed. Fulachtaí fia are almost invariably found close to water or in low-lying, wet areas, a pattern that connects to the leading theory about how they functioned: water was collected or naturally present in a trough, stones were heated in a nearby fire and dropped into the water to bring it to a boil, and the discarded, shattered stones accumulated over time into the characteristic mound. The reclamation of the formerly waterlogged field at Ballynamona was what exposed this one to notice, a reminder that much of what survives of prehistoric Ireland lies just beneath ordinary farmland, waiting on circumstance rather than archaeology to reveal it.
