They appear as low, horseshoe-shaped mounds, typically found near water, and are thought to date from the Bronze Age, roughly 1500 to 500 BC. The prevailing interpretation is that they were outdoor cooking sites: a trough would be filled with water, and stones heated in a nearby fire would be dropped in to bring it to the boil. Experiments have shown the method works remarkably efficiently. The mound itself is formed from the discarded, fire-cracked stones, which become useless after repeated heating and cooling.
