That ambiguity is not a failure of archaeology but almost the point: a fulacht fia, a type of Bronze Age burnt mound typically found beside water, is the kind of monument that exists in enormous numbers across Ireland yet manages to be simultaneously everywhere and invisible. They appear as low horseshoe-shaped mounds of fire-cracked stone, the accumulated debris of a process in which water was heated by dropping in stones that had been made red-hot in a nearby fire. Whether used for cooking, bathing, or some combination of both remains debated. This particular example, at Caher in County Kerry, sits at the more elusive end of the spectrum.

The site came to light not through dedicated fieldwork but as a byproduct of a road-planning assessment carried out in 2000 by Michael Connolly, Kerry County Council's County Archaeologist. While evaluating a roughly 40 square mile area north of Killarney to help determine a suitable road route, Connolly identified this as one of seven fulacht fia still present in the area. That figure alone suggests how densely this landscape was used in prehistory, even where the surface now offers little to see. At Caher, there is no visible surface trace at the recorded coordinates. The monument, if intact, lies somewhere within an unplanted forestry buffer zone, fenced off to the west and north with post and wire, hemmed in by forestry plantations on two sides and a field boundary on the others. The ground inside has gone ungrazed and is now dense with ferns, briars, and other vegetation that has quietly buried whatever archaeology may remain beneath it.
