A fulacht fia is essentially a burnt mound, the accumulated debris of an ancient cooking or industrial process in which stones were repeatedly heated and plunged into water-filled troughs. They are found in their thousands across the Irish landscape, usually low, horseshoe-shaped mounds of fire-cracked stone dating broadly to the Bronze Age. This particular example is unusual not for any grand archaeological reason, but for a more deflationary one: nobody can quite confirm it is there at all.

The site came to attention in 2000, when Michael Connolly, County Archaeologist for Kerry County Council, surveyed a forty square mile area north of Killarney as part of a road route assessment. Within that sweep, he identified seven fulachtaí fia he considered extant, and this site at Caher was among them. When the location was later visited, however, no visible surface trace could be found. The monument, if it survives, appears to sit within an unplanted forestry buffer zone, cordoned off to the west and north by a post and wire fence, with forestry pressing in on two sides and field boundaries on the others. The ground inside has been left ungrazed and has grown thick with vegetation, making any physical inspection of the kind that would confirm or disprove the monument's presence effectively impossible under current conditions. The possibility that something is there remains open; the ability to verify it does not.
